Abstract

This book offers a comprehensive analysis of the multifaceted dimensions of violent extremist groups in South Asia, attending especially to the relationships between the local and regional forces influencing their emergence and activities. In addition, research in the book shows how political, security-sensitive events and processes are framed, and the factors responsible for such framing. Similarly, it discusses prevalent discourses on anti-violent extremism policy and the on-the-ground militarized preventive/reactive interventions they guide, which are inspired by ideologies that increasingly reflect controversial understandings of the experiences of people within conditions of state fragility. In doing so, the book balances attention to local conditions that frame the rise and fall, or persistency, of incidences of violent extremism. The systems-based ecological framing of issues in the book is influenced by a concern for the broader questions of securitization, global governance, poverty, (under)development, and armed conflicts in South Asia. Shafi Md Mostofa (Ph.D.) is a theologian and security studies scholar with broad interests in political Islam, authoritarianism, modern South Asian history and politics, and international relations and clash of civilizations. He is an associate professor of World Religions and Culture at Dhaka University’s Faculty of Arts and an adjunct lecturer of the University of New England, Australia. .

Abstract

"One of the prevailing issues regarding security to North America and more pointedly, the United States, gravitates on the topic of cyber threats confronting this nation. These threats are becoming more disruptive and destructive and many nations' infrastructure is vulnerable to them. This book makes use of a qualitative research methodology looking at a conventional understanding of the four instruments of power that include diplomacy, information, military and economic (D.I.M.E.) efforts through the use of the York Intelligence Red Team Model-Cyber (Modified) and seeing how adversaries are using them against the United States. Moreover, this project uses secondary data and makes use of the Federal Secondary Data Case Study Triangulation Model to ensure a balance of sources to dissect the problem"--Publisher's description.

Abstract

“In this important contribution, Stratos Georgoulas offers a comprehensive and in-depth exploration of the origins of critical criminology. Rarely do traditional textbooks cover this material in enough depth for readers to truly understand the historical developments of criminology. Georgoulas conveys his innovative review in a fascinating way that takes the reader into new realms rarely visited in criminology. Students and scholars alike will gain invaluable insights and engage with the rich history presented here.” — Chad Posick, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice & Criminology, Georgia Southern University, USA “The Origins of Radical Criminology is a major work. In its three volumes published so far, Stratos Georgoulas conducts a genealogical tour de force against the criminological hegemony that shapes our worldview; a truly critical exercise that, by definition, can only achieve its goal from a radical approach. And so it does, to remind us that the history of resistance is as long and diverse as the history of the powers they must confront, and that the fight goes on.” — Daniel Jiménez-Franco, Coordinator of the European Group for the Study of Deviance & Social Control, Universidad de Zaragoza, Spain This book critically explores the development of radical criminological thought through the social, political and cultural history of the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. It follows on from the previous volume which examined Classical Greece until the emergence of the early Christian movement in the Roman empire. Through separate chapters, it discusses the key literature (myths, fairy tales and Shakespeare), religions and philosophers of the era, and the development of early radical views and issues over time. This book examines the links between the origins of radical criminology and its future. It speaks to those interested in the (pre)history of criminology and the historical production of criminological knowledge, drawing on Criminology, Sociology, Classics, History, Philosophy, Ancient Literature and Politics. Stratos Georgoulas is Professor and Deputy Head of the Department of Sociology at the University of the Aegean, Greece. He is recognized in the scientific field of Critical Criminology, winning international awards for teaching in the USA (Fulbright), Canada, Slovakia, Syria, Jordan and Palestine.

Abstract

High-threat decision-making is intrinsic to many domains and carries an individual, organizational, and social responsibility. Tactical and incident commanders make decisions in the high-threat law enforcement context of hostage rescue, armed barricaded suspects, and armed suicidal individuals that can result in successful or catastrophic outcomes. This book describes the experiences and methods of making decisions in these types of extreme environments. The presented research addresses learning strategies that could better prepare leaders for information processing in any high-threat domain, while optimizing speed and accuracy in decision-making. This volume emphasizes the role of adaptive expertise in decision-making, and explains how mental models of recurring patterns are created and retrieved, and why they are necessary for effective situational assessments. This book is ideal for police commanders and executives, emergency response managers, first responders, and criminology researchers. It is also well-suited for professionals seeking further information about improved high-threat decision-making strategies. One of the only resources currently available on high-threat decision-making in a law enforcement context Timely and important topic as it relates to a police response during extreme situations Applicable in multiple high-threat decision-making domains.

Abstract

Abstract

This text offers a novel contribution to criminological theory by introducing the complex issues relating to the structuring and analysing of causation. Warr traces the paradigm shift, or drift, that has occurred in the history of criminology and shows how the problem of causation has been a leading factor in these theoretical developments. This is an introductory text which presents both seasoned criminologists as well as students with the interesting intersections between the fields of criminology and the philosophy of the social sciences. The problem of causation is notoriously difficult and has plagued philosophers and scientists for centuries. Warr highlights the importance of grappling with this problem and demonstrates how it can lead to unsuccessful theorising. This accessible account will be a must-read for scholars of criminal justice, penology and philosophy of social science. Jason Warr is a Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Lincoln, UK, with interests in penology, sociology of power and the philosophy of science. He holds an HEA teaching fellowship and teaches across criminology, penology and research methods.

Abstract

This book examines mass shootings and attempted shootings that occurred across 16 countries in Central and Eastern Europe, known as post-communist states. This region of the world has been described by social scientists as possessing specific social, cultural, and political characteristics which may mean that mass shootings in this part of the world are driven by distinct causal factors in comparison to those in North America and elsewhere. This book explores trends and patterns that underpin cases in this under-explored region and tests whether Cumulative Strain Theory can account for mass shooting occurrences. It uses in-depth qualitative analysis to examine select case studies in one chapter, followed by a chapter which uses quantitative methods to identify trends across a wider set of cases and to test the theoretically-driven hypotheses. This data is then compared with data in the US. This book draws on a wide range of media, forensic and court reports and provides methodological insights and discussions of future trends including the potential incidental increase of mass shootings in these regions. It also engages in recent public policy debates pertaining to firearm ownership and regulation. Alexei Anisin is Dean of the School of International Relations and Diplomacy at the Anglo-American University in the Czech Repulic, and Research Associate at the Institute of Political Studies in the Faculty of Social Sciences at Charles University Prague, Czech Republic.

Abstract

This book focuses on the criminalization trend and process regarding the internal migration in contemporary China from the perspective Law-in-Action. In Chinese society today, internal migrants are commonly perceived as criminals. Crimmigration, a global term that communicated the convergence of the criminal legal system and the immigration enforcement system, manifest itself in China’s hukou-based (also known as the household registration system) criminal legal system. How hukou has been constructed into the concept of Crimmigration in China strikes at the core of the ultimate questions of this book: who is being criminalized, how does the political-economic-cultural institution known as ‘hukou’ shape the criminal justice process, and how has the role of hukou changed over time in the ever-changing process? Drawing on interviews with migrant leaders, police, prosecutors, criminal lawyers & judges, and prison staff in Yangtze River Delta, China, this book reflects on a historical development on hukou and its function in social control. Each chapter contributes to an extended analysis of pragmatic aspects of decision-making moments in the criminal justice system. This book will appeal to criminology researchers and students with in interest in law, politics, migration, and citizenship in contemporary China. Newly challenges parallels between hukou-based criminal justice system and Crimmigration in the developed countries; First systematic and holistic picture of Law-in-Action in urban China from unique access to government staff; Little scholarship on internal migration, particularly in the North, thus will contribute to growing the scope of Chinese migration studies.
